2024 SUMMARY

BUCKET EXHIBITIONS was very busy with COLLABORATIVE Print projects in 2024.  It started when BIG INK came to Albuquerque in April -- continued with the COLLABORATION of 5 print out of Henry Morales' studio -- and culminated in the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project since May:

Prints have to be SHOWN!

Exhibiting is the goal of BUCKET EXHIBITIONS, so our fundamental CONCEPT is to show SMALLER prints, because that is cheap and easy. However if the momentum builds enough to make and show BIGGER prints, that is even better.  And that is what happened in 2024.

BIGGER PRINTS

We made and exhibited larger prints in 2024:

The year started in Henry Morales' studio, by carving a collaborative woodcut for when BIG INK came to Albuquerque to print it in May:

The BIG INK collaboration sparked the enthusiasm to collaborate on a print again in Henry Morales' studio, developing into the COLLABORATION of 5 print:

This enthusiasm for collaboration culminated in the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project, started in May, and blossomed into an exhibition in Albuquerque in December:

LIVE PRINTMAKING

In order to show prints we have to make prints -- so we always do a little LIVE PRINTMAKING at openings and events to encourage that:

 BIG EVENTS

We PRINTED LIVE at a few big events -- specifically the PRINTERS PLANET, both in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and the SOUTHWEST PRINT FIESTA in Silver City, New Mexico:

We did LIVE PRINTMAKING at the PRINTERS PLANET in Albuquerque in May:

We did LIVE PRINTMAKING at the PRINTERS PLANET in Santa Fe in August:

We did LIVE PRINTMAKING during the after-party of the SOUTHWEST PRINT FIESTA in Silver City, New Mexico in October:

Henry Morales and Ellie Weadock did LIVE PRINTMAKING for Henry's relief workshop at the HUBBEL HOUSE in Albuquerque in September:

PAVEL ACEVEDO revved up the printmaking in New Mexico when he came to run a relief printmaking workshop at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in September/October.  He also returned to participate in the Southwest Print Fiesta in Silver City and do a silk screening demo at Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque:

EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Prints -- 2024 SUMMARY

tinyurl.com/TessPrints

This print project is based on a "HAT" shape -- an aperiodic monotile that tessellates infinitely without making a regular pattern.  It was discovered by DAVID SMITH in November of 2022, who even wrote back to us when we emailed him about our first EXQUISITE TESSELLATION exhibition

Our artistic aim was to devise a COLLABORATIVE PRINT project -- by creating bigger prints from the individual "hat" linocuts by several artists, in the spirit of the Surrealist EXQUISITE CORPSE collaborations:

12 EXQUISITE TESSELLATION PRINTS

It All Started in
HENRY MORALES' STUDIO

After the BIG INK project on April 13th, the team in Henry Morales' studio was keen on doing more collaborative printmaking.  The model from the April 29th, 2024 drawing session suggested that we make tessellation prints like MC Escher.  We liked her suggestion and laid out the project in a blog post made on May 2nd, 2024.

FIRST EXHIBITION

We ended the year with the First Exhibition of EXQUSISITE TESSELLATION prints in Albuquerque at Remarque Print Workshop, shown from December 13, 2024 to January 25, 2025:

The "HAT" Tile

The "HAT" shape discovery was the solution to the "Ein Stein" problem (nothing to do with Albert) -- of finding a single tile that would tessellate infinitely without making a pattern:

Single "hat" vector file -- EinStein.SVG  (689 bytes)

Apparently the "hat" tile requires the addition of a few "MIRRORED HAT" tiles in order to tile infinitely:

Dr Ben Miles explains the "HAT" tile and it's fascinating backstory on YouTube:

LASER CUTTING

We have been LASER CUTTING "hat" shapes -- 7 inches at the WIDEST points -- from REAL linoleum, buying 12 x 18 inch sheets from Takach Press in Albuquerque:

  • Only REAL linoleum is safe to use on the laser cutter, as a lot of other sheets sold at art stores are fake linoleum made with PVC, which can let off poisonous gas when burned by the laser.

PRINTMAKERS

We post the individual "hat" prints online:

12 PRINTMAKING
SESSIONS

We made 35 PRINTS in 12 PRINTMAKING SESSIONS in 2024:

Hand-printed at the SOUTH BROADWAY CULTURAL CENTER in Albuquerque:

Three prints hand-printed at the SANTA FE COMMUNITY COLLEGE:

Hand-printed during the drawing session at the FUSION Arts complex in Albuquerque:

Five prints pulled on a press at UTEP in El Paso:

Hand-printed during the PRINTERS PLANET market in Santa Fe:

Hand printed in front of the Axle Contemporary Mobile Art van, in Socorro, New Mexico:

Six prints hand-printed during the drawing session at Argos Studio/Gallery in Santa Fe:

Five prints hand-printed at Hecho A Mano gallery in Santa Fe:

Two prints pulled on a press at CNM community college on the west side in Albuquerque:

Four prints hand-printed in Silver City, New Mexico during the after-party for the Southwest Print Fiesta:

Hand printed during the first Day of the Dead Parade at the CIVIC PLAZA in downtown Albuquerque:

Five color prints pulled on a press at Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque:

TUCSON

Karl Whitaker is collecting tiles in ALBUQUERQUE, Manuel Guerra is collecting tiles in EL PASO -- and now Joe Marshall has jumped in and is collecting tiles in TUCSON:

Note how the individual "HAT" tessellation prints look great by themselves, in 8x8 inch frames when hung on the wall together.  They can be carried around in a BUCKET and displayed spontaneously -- which was the ORIGINAL CONCEPT of the BUCKET EXHIBITIONS
Is it the individual carving, the communal printmaking, or the exhibiting that delivers the most satisfaction from the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project?

THE FIRST Exquisite Tessellation Exhibition

The opening for our first EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print exhibition was on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque. We piggybacked on their 12th Annual International Juried Print Exhibition:

Julianna Kirwin is also represented in the same larger print,

LYELL CASTONGUAY'S print is hung in the middle of the New Mexico individual prints because he helped inspire the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project.  He printed the large collaboration print by Henry Morales, Ellie Weadock, and Virgil Velasco in April 2024, when BIG INK came to town.

The experience was so successful that everyone wanted to continue collaborative printmaking in some way, like the Surrealist game -- the Exquisite Corpse.  After the model suggested tessellation, we decided to collaborate with the recently discovered "hat" aperiodic tessellation tiles:
