THE FIRST Exquisite Tessellation Exhibition

The opening for our first EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print exhibition was on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque. We piggybacked on their 12th Annual International Juried Print Exhibition:

Julianna Kirwin is also represented in the same larger print,

LYELL CASTONGUAY'S print is hung in the middle of the New Mexico individual prints because he helped inspire the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project.  He printed the large collaboration print by Henry Morales, Ellie Weadock, and Virgil Velasco in April 2024, when BIG INK came to town.

The experience was so successful that everyone wanted to continue collaborative printmaking in some way, like the Surrealist game -- the Exquisite Corpse.  After the model suggested tessellation, we decided to collaborate with the recently discovered "hat" aperiodic tessellation tiles:

REMARQUE EXHIBITION 2024 -- Labeling CREDITS

tinyurl.com/exqtess

Our first exhibition of the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Prints is at Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  THE OPENING was on Friday, December 13th, 5 - 8 PM. The exhibition runs until January 25th, 2025 -- open on Friday and Saturdays, 10 AM to 6 PM:

Our EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Exhibition is piggybacking on Remarque's 12th Annual International Juried Print Exhibition:

The EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project is based on a shape that will tessellate infinitely -- without ever creating a regular pattern. This particular "hat" shape is called an "aperiodic monotile," and it was only recently discovered in late 2022 by DAVID SMITH. Since last May (2024) we have been laser cutting this "hat" shape from linoleum -- and asking artists to carve and send back their linocut tiles. Then we piece the tiles together to make larger collaborative tessellation prints, not unlike in the Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse.

The impulse to make collaborative prints came from the studio of Henry Morales. First, after Virgil Velasco suggested making small two-person prints. Then the momentum continued when Henry, Virgil and Ellie Weadock collaborated to carve a large plate (28" x 48"), for Lyell Castonguay of BIG INK to print when came to Albuquerque last April. This collaboration fever continues with the EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print project, as linocuts come in from all over the Southwest to be printed together, just to see what happens.

While we are collecting tessellation linocuts in ALBUQUERQUE -- Manuel Guerra is collecting another set in EL PASO -- and Joe Marshall has begun collecting tessellation tiles in TUCSON. We have even sent a stack of tessellation tiles to Tres Gatos Press in Guadalajara.
