Axle -- Counter Culture -- July 14, 2022

The Axle Contemporary mobile art van parked out in front of Counter Culture in Santa Fe, and to show our 66 prints on Thursday, July 14th, from 11 AM to 2:30 PM.

and lure them into our show inside the art van

We were very pleased that Mike Crockett came by

The BIG SWITCH

After the PRINTED MATTER Festival on Sunday, July 10th, we switched out two of our 66 prints.  We took down the prints by Skye Tafoya and Ian Kuali'i and replaced them with prints by Thayer Carter and Arlene Ory.  All the prints are by Santa Fe artists, so the top row of prints was still all by Santa Fe artists (except the two round prints by Tres Gatos Press of Guadalajara):

Thayer Carter

Thayer Carter gave us this print during the PRINTED MATTER Festival the previous Sunday:

However since we had given all copies back to Arlene, we decided to try something new and very 21st Century.  Having scanned Arlene's print last year, we laser cut it into linoleum at using the hand held LaserPecker 2.  With a couple of passes this laser engraver cut deep enough into the linoleum to make a nice linocut plate to print, as we had done previously at Quelab in Albuquerque.

The original print filled a 6x6 inch linoleum square, whereas the LaserPecker 2 only engraves 4x4 inches maximum.  However, we could engrave multiple copies, in different sizes:

4x4 inch and 2x2 inch laser engravings on linoleum
ready to be printed on the Tortilla Press

Arlene's simple horse design lends itself to making laser cut relief prints.

We did make some "adjustments."  In the original print, the horse was facing the opposite direction.  Moreover we did not laser cut the horseshoes in the background.

So we cut a new linoleum square, with a 4x4 inch horse, and gave it to Arlene to hand cut whatever she liked into the background.

Moreover we could still cut full 6x6 inch prints on the bigger laser cutter at Quelab.

We look forward to seeing how Arlene enhances her horse linoleum with a hand carved background.  Furthermore we will continue to make laser cut relief prints.  The print by Rex Barron was also made with a laser cutter, and we exhibited in a row below Arlene's print.
