ALBU-BRIJES -- SUMMARY, JULY 2026

We were inspired by the HUGE 20 feet tall ALEBRIJES & NAHUALES  sculptures from Oaxaca installed in downtown Albuquerque from June 1st to July 22nd, 2026 -- and decided to carve our own linocut visions as ALBU-BRIJES -- which we then enhanced with AUGMENTED REALITY using AI:

ALEBRIJES are a folk art from Oaxaca which originated in Mexico City in 1936, after Pedro Linares envisioned these chimera animals during an intense illness.  When he recovered he made the colorful animals in cartonería (papier-mâché), which got the attention of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

  • NOTE: ZOZOBRA in Santa Fe was inspired by the same Mexican cartonería (papier-mâché) tradition that ALEBRIJES sprung from

OUR LINOCUT
ALBU-BRIJES

We are calling the ALBUQUERQUE variations -- ALBU-BRIJES:

PROCESS

We first enhanced the black-and-white ALBU-BRIJE Prints by coloring and turning them into 3D with AI (in KREA and MESHY):

AUGMENTED REALITY
Two Approaches
 ALBU-BRIJES

And then we import the colorful 3D version into two different versions of AUGMENTED REALITIES:

First Approach
ENVIRONMENT AR

The colorful AI-enhanced ALBU-BRIJES can be placed in the environment with AUGMENTED REALITY by using their smart phones -- which allows people to take screen shots, as if the ALBU-BRIJES were real:

View ALL the ALBU-BRIJES from THIS WEBPAGE -- or just click the blue links below to see the Augmented Reality by the following artists:

Second Approach
MULTIPLE AR

Or view multiple AUGMENT REALITIES after going to just One Single URL.  One can just hover their smart phone over the prints, and then a colorful AUGMENTED REALITY figure will emerge.  NOTE: The prints act like QR Codes after going to the URL:

After going to the QR CODE on the bench,
hover your smart phone over each of the three prints,
to see three different colorful ALBU-BRIJES figures emerge

  • We used MINDAR to generate the multiple AUGMENT REALITY program (which then has to be hosted on a server)

We were really excited to see the huge ALIBRIJE Sculptures from Oaxaca in downtown Albuquerque this summer -- and even more sorry to see them go.  They really elevated the mood and feeling of downtown.

The first YouTube of the ALEBRIJES in Albuquerque with Classic Cars, but without the prints:
While not previously interacting with the Oaxaca Alebrijes, we have been working with Oaxacan printmakers since 2014, culminating in the AMBOS LADOS International Print Exchange, organized by both El Paso and Oaxaca:
