8x8 Print Exhibition in Guadalajara

They had a wonderful 8x8 print exhibition in Guadalajara on July 8, 2023:

Manuel Guerra, of Horned Toad Prints in El Paso, joined with Xavier Moreno and Alejandra Mares, of 3 Gatos Press in Guadalajara -- to exhibit prints, and make prints, at the Galeria Sepia in Guadalajara (Gabriel Ramos Millán #81 Col. Americana):

Manuel Guerra sent a small selection of prints from his recent 8x8 II exhibition (culled from the 189 prints in El Paso, on 8x8 inch paper) to frame and show in Guadalajara.

Manuel Guerra also brought a stack of round linocuts, mostly from El Paso and New Mexico, to print and give out to visitors.  Alejandra Mares and Xavier Moreno brought their Tortilla Press, as well as other round linocuts from Mexican artists.  So visitors had a wide range of quality images to choose from both countries:

They even got a round linocut from Australia, as Carnegie Muir emailed an image which Manuel Guerra had engraved on linoleum with a laser cutter.  Why not go worldwide?

OUR DEBT
 TO 3 GATOS PRESS

We "borrowed" the idea of doing live printmaking with a Tortilla Press from 3 Gatos Press. They took us to print on the streets of Tlaquepaque in 2019:

We also borrowed the idea of printing round "Taco" prints from 3 Gatos Press, when we printed live in Santa Fe for the Printers Planet Pop-up on June 24th, 2023:

*****

It is pretty amazing to exhibit prints on both sides of the border.   Mexico is known for their artists, so it is a real privilege to exhibit with Mexican artists.  Moreover we have a lot of great artists in the Southwest United States that need to be seen.  El Paso is at the perfect junction between these two cultures, and hopefully will continue to facilitate exhibitions of artists from both countries -- as it has done with the Ambos Lados exhibition, these 8x8 exhibitions, and with the Border Biennial and other exhibitions in the future.

AMBOS LADOS

Currently there is also another previous exhibition of both Mexican and USA prints  -- the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange -- at the El Paso Museum of History.  The closing will be on July 15th, 2023.

  • In a sense, the 8x8 exhibitions are a follow-up to Ambos Lados...
