Tessellation Prints -- PRINTERS PLANET 2024

EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print

We made one successful larger collaborative EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Print (and one failed tessellation print on handmade paper) during the PRINTERS PLANET market:

Ellie printed the tessellation linocut that Holly Grimm of Santa Fe brought to our tent:

Then we added Holly's linocut to three others to make larger collaborative EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Prints:

The first print on handmade paper
came out way too fuzzy
(however it might print better with a real press)

The second print on Kitakata paper
came out wonderfully!!!

BACKSTORY

The EXQUISITE TESSELLATION Prints are made from a "hat" shape that has only been known to the world for little over a year.  This "hat" shape is the solution to the "Ein Stein" problem, of a shape that would tile infinitely without making a regular pattern.  This particular shape was discovered by David Smith in late 2022.  The video below gives more insight to this special shape, which we laser cut from linoleum:

BUCKET EXHIBITIONS at PRINTERS PLANET 2024

BUCKET EXHIBITIONS Tent

Ellie Weadock and Karl Whitaker printed live in the BUCKET EXHIBITIONS tent, and gave out free prints of two varieties -- individual Tessellation prints and AI prints from the Tortilla Press:

Tim Jag, the organizer of the PRINTERS PLANET,
came by to make a print

TORTILLA PRESS

The white table was for making round "street taco-sized" prints on the Tortilla Press.  The 4 inch round linocut discs were of animal images generated by AI (Artificial Intelligence) with Midjourney:

We collaborated with the OffCenter Arts table.  They had hand-carved a bunch of small erasers.  So after we printed an AI porcupine on the Tortilla Press, they put a silk screening squeegee in the porcupine's hands, ink with a stamp pad:

Individual TESSELLATION Prints

The "hat" shaped tessellation linocuts made great individual prints, even though they were conceived to make larger collaboration prints:

John Tollett brought his carved tessellation linocut
and we printed it immediately

Arlene also brought a tessellation tile
which we printed

PRINT COLLABORATION

We made a collaborative print with OffCenter Arts.  They hand-carved erasers and inked them up with stamp pads:

PRINTS and AR

The javelina print concealed a thin credit-card-sized NFC card inside the frame -- such that when one taps the print with their smart phone, an AR Alien Javelina shows up.  Go to the link under the 3D Alien Javelina on your smart phone, and then place that "Augmented Reality" (AR) Alien Javelina in the real world:

Then take a screen grab photo of the AR Alien Javelina in the real world:

The LEAF Print

Ellie printed a leaf for a little girl (although there are no photos of it).

Ellie offered to print any of the linocuts, but the little girl refused a print -- even after her grandparents encouraged her to select a one.  The prints were free after all.

Then a leaf fell on the printmaking table, and the little girl said that she wanted a print of that.  So Ellie inked up the leaf and ran it through the press.  The little girl left, pleased with her new leaf print.

That's what makes the print demos exciting and worthwhile.
